Sri Dalada Maligawa is a place of great religious and historical importance to Buddhists in Sri Lanka. This sacred temple is located in the city of Kandy, where I live. The sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha is enshrined in this temple. Because of this, it is considered one of the most important religious and tourist destinations in Sri Lanka๐.
The temple has a very long history. According to legend, the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha was brought from India to Sri Lanka by Prince Danta and Princess Hemamala. From that time, the kings of Sri Lanka protected the Sacred Tooth Relic and kept it in different royal capitals for safety. Eventually, it was placed in the Temple of the Tooth in the Kingdom of Kandy.
The temple is beautifully decorated with traditional Sri Lankan arts such as wood carvings, wall paintings๐, and golden ornaments. In addition, many historical objects such as clothes worn by kings and queens, pearl and gem jewelry, and ancient furniture are preserved in a museum for both local and foreign visitors to see. Many visitors come here every day to witness the daily religious rituals (pooja) held in honor of the Sacred Tooth Relic.
Furthermore, the famous annual procession known as the Kandy Esala Perahera is closely connected with the temple. During this grand festival, beautifully decorated elephants, traditional dancers, and drummers participate in a magnificent procession to honor the Sacred Tooth Relic ๐✨.
Today, the Temple of the Tooth is considered an important cultural heritage site of Sri Lanka and one of the most famous religious places in the world. It is not only sacred to Buddhists but also an important place for anyone interested in studying the history and culture of Sri Lanka.
